Finn Taylor was born in 1982 in Hong Kong. His early childhood was spent in Cyprus until he moved to Dorset in 1993. Finn always had a camera close by growing up, notably a 110 picked from the Argos catalogue. From the tender age of 7, Finn became the trusted photographer, documenting school trips, baseball club, fishing trips and summer camps. All the images were collated and put into albums. Taylor's passion for photography continued and on his 15th birthday he received a gleaming Nikon FM2.
At 18, Finn moved to Sussex and started the next chapter at Brighton University. Not getting onto the photography course proved invaluable as Finn then learnt first hand what it was to be a photographer. He educated himself through books, camera shops, exhibitions, a mini darkroom and shooting endless rolls of film as well as assisting. Finn continued assisting for the following 5 years, learning the trade and nurturing his own style.
Finn's first notable commission was a 2012 Cultural Olympiad Initiative, where he documented pockets of Britain's youth, their space, how they used it and the barriers they faced. This resulted in a raw, touching and honest document of British youth culture today.
Finn's polished, low-maintenance and quick method of working has led to many commissions, including portraits of John Legend and Michael Flatley, campaigns for Nike, a cultural story on Chicken & Chip shop fans, as well as projects on a boxer and vet.
Alongside his commercial work, Finn continues to work on other projects, including a nostalgic look at life in Cyprus, documenting the funny traits and stereotypes he fondly remembers.
Finn Taylor's style is simple and honest, capturing beautiful snippets of the lives of everyday people.
